Vibe Checking Musicals

Have you ever found yourself wondering what musicals would be like at a party? Which group would be your favorite? I think about this maybe a little too much for a regular person, so you get to see it too! Let’s group some musicals!

*Disclaimer: It is okay to love any of these musicals and I love at least one in each category. You do you!

Depressed! At the Disco

These musicals may seem ready to party at first, but the real meaning behind them reveals something deeper. One minute, they’re jamming out to beautiful music, and the next, they’re having an existential crisis. The cruelty of the real world is partially hidden by the upbeat music (which is why this is my favorite category).

  • Next to Normal

  • Hadestown

  • In the Heights

  • Tina (The Tina Turner Musical)

Thinks it’s Shallow, but is Deep

These musicals think that they are just here for a good time, but if you take a deeper look, they actually have a decent amount of substance to them. Suddenly, it’s 2 AM, and you are having a meaningful conversation with the popular girl.

  • Frozen

  • Hairspray

  • Legally Blonde

  • Heathers

No Thoughts, Head Empty

These musicals are really just here for a good time. The message isn’t as prevalent, or the fun of the musical overtakes the message. These are for you if you want to have a fun time and not think too much. Let’s take another shot!

  • Chicago

  • Spongebob Squarepants

  • Six

  • Back to the Future

Thinks it’s Deep, but it isn’t

These musicals sit in the corner of the party trying to act mysterious, but everyone knows that they just took a hit of a joint and are now extremely light-headed. These are for you if you want to pretend you like deep art.

  • The Phantom of the Opera

  • Dear Evan Hansen

  • Cats

  • The Band’s Visit

This Didn’t Need to be a Musical

I really don’t know who invited these guys. I think they might be a friend of a friend of a friend. These are for you if you really, really like the source material and don’t mind it being disappointing.

  • Mrs. Doubtfire

  • The Cher Show

  • Little Women

  • Choir of Man

Camp to the Max

These musicals really understand how to stand out. They are having more fun than anyone else, and they do not care what anyone thinks of them. These are for people who want to have fun and don’t care if it looks silly while it’s happening.

  • Mean Girls

  • Little Shop of Horrors

  • Death Becomes Her

  • Be More Chill

Which is your favorite? Where would you put yourself in these? Did I miss any important ones? Let me know!
